Zero Waste Sustainable Art

Local and International Teenagers from Europe and the U.S.A.

In summer 2019 we ran a series of sustainable art workshops about Zero Waste. The aim was to foster an actively caring attitude toward the environment and to raise awareness about the importance of looking after our surroundings. Our students worked with the natural resources that they had at hand and with waste they found on the coast. The sculptures, made with natural materials, remained on the beach as a sustainability message for the visiting and local community. They brought the recyclable and non-recyclable materials to the classroom and made art projects out of them.

Forest Garden Boxes

Built by local and international students in Bundoran

The aim of our food forest box project was to create a microcosm of a food forest in several 6 x 6 ft boxes built by our students in the centre of Bundoran.

Food forests, or forest gardens as they are also known, are a sustainable agroforestry practice based on woodland ecosystems. The forest incorporates fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables that are directly beneficial to humans into a garden. Think of a food forest as a forest where you can eat anything that grows.

The project introduced the concept of a food forest to our students and also provided an excellent opportunity for our students to learn new building techniques such as using power tools, measuring and joining as they designed and constructing the boxes from a concept to a finished product.

The project also provides signage for locals and visitors to Bundoran alike to read up on the concept of food forestry as they enjoy some of the delicious fruit growing in the boxes.

Sustainable farming tours at Campview Farm

Local and European teenagers

We have visited Campview Farm many times since they opened and our students have enjoyed their tours, where they learn where milk, potatoes and wool come from (some of them have never seen a cow being milked before). During our workshops at the Community Gardens, our students learn about the plants that grow in Ireland, the seasons they grow in, help harvesting and taste the fruits they collect.

Marine Camp

Local children

During our marine camp, children got to learn about the animals and plants that populate our coasts (both in English and in Irish), collect samples on the beach and they had an opportunity to carry out experiments to see the behavior of sods in salt water and marine life through a microscope.

Castle Park Grow.jpg

Castle Park Project

In 2020 we built Castle Park, a community green space and eco-park purpose designed and built by our gap year students for the local community in Bundoran. The park hosts ecological and sustainability workshops, yoga, gardening and a range of other holistic projects designed to raise ecological awareness and teach new skills to both our students and the greater community. The park consists of vegetable beds, a polytunnel, a cob pizza oven and a zen garden.

There are always plenty of jobs to be done maintaining the park and working on new Green Education Ireland projects. This is a wonderful and peaceful place right on the Atlantic coast where students learn many new skills alongside members of the local community.

Tree Planting Bundoran

Green Education together with local partners have selected certain areas across Bundoran for new planting schemes, or re-wilding initiatives. We look forward to sharing more on this project as it begins to grow!
